Infected files can be downloaded if you open an e-mail message from someone you do not know, or even from your friends. If there is anything suspicious, simply do not download the file or open it. If your friend sends files, you should check the file by anti-virus programs for maximum security.

When a hacker wants to send you a file, he/she would like to be sure that you would want to open that file or download. They generally get as much information as they can about you.
